I graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 2008 with a B.S. in Marine biology and a minor in marine affairs. The semester before I graduated I did an internship at the Paul Cuffee School in Providence in an 8th grade science class. This internship opened my eyes to the world of education, particularly in urban districts. The experience I had at Paul Cuffee made me pursue a career as an educator. Currently, I am a master candidate for middle and secondary education with a concentration in biology and general science. My expected graduation date is May 2012. While pursuing a degree as a master’s candidate, I am also working as a marine laboratory technician in a deep sea physiology lab. I look forward to sharing the skills and experiences I have gained from working as a scientist with all of my students.
When I am not teaching, I am a passionate locavore, gardener and enjoy volunteering on local community farms. I stay active with my boxer Autumn and enjoy yoga and training for Triathlons
Unit Plan.
This unit builds on previous unit where the students had an introduction to general genetics. This unit is designed to show how the principles of genetics can be directly applied to humans in their every day life. Students will study four major themes of human genetics: inheritance, genetic disorders, the human genome project and genetic engineering. While exploring these topics, students will investigate the ethical and legal challenges this emerging research has generated. To end the unit the students will have a formal debate to demonstrate their knowledge on this topic.
